TRIDA draws up action plan for widening main roads

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM March 5. The Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) has drawn up an ambitious action plan to expedite the widening of important roads in the city at an estimated cost of Rs. 219 crores and to complete it in a time bound manner.

The TRIDA chairman, P. K. Venugopal, said here today that work on the Pattom-Palayam-East Fort, Kazhakoottam-Sreekariyam-Ulloor- Kesavadasapuram, Attakulangara-Ambalathara bypass, Airport- Shangumughom, Chackai-Pattoor-Palayam, Bakery-Vazhuthacaud- Poojapura, Karakulam-Peroorkada, Ambalamukku-Kowdiyar, Vellayambalam-Thycaud, Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam, and Maruthankuzhi-Vattiyoorkavu roads would be taken up this year and completed at the earliest.

A clear timeframe has been set for starting the follow up of the pending projects and also those to be taken up afresh. The roads identified for widening are those which have been included either in the Government approved masterplan or in the road network plan for 2011. In order to complete the widening programme within a specified period, work would begin this financial year itself, he said.

Work on the Palayam-Pattoor, Vazhuthacaud- Thycaud roads, Sunnymade lane and Punnen road will be completed this year itself, Mr. Venugopal said.

Finishing touches are being given to the project for widening the Karamana-Poojapura-Thirumala road, the Venpalavattom-Poonthi-Kumarapuram road, the Murinjapalam-Pattom- Kuravankonam-Kowdiyar road, the inner city roads such as Thampanoor-Bakery, the stretches between Sreekumar Theatre junction and Vanross Junction, Jacobs junction and Bakery junction, Ayurveda College and Uppilamoodu. The project is expected to be implemented in 2004 and completed by 2006, Mr.Venugopal said.

He said that the Government allocation for the projects was insufficient. Financial institutions may not be willing to finance the schemes which are not productive. Moreover, repayment of such loans is financially unviable for the authority. Hence, Mr.Venugopal urged the Government to provide long-term loans.

The authority has decided to spend Rs.149.56 crores to acquire land for road widening from 2003-6.
