Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
At a press conference here today, the convener of the vedi, Mercy Alexander, and co-convener, K. Ajitha, said the Vedi would observe March 8 as `protest day' to express their outrage over the torture of Adivasis at Muthanga. They also released a list of 80 women and children who were missing from the tribal colonies after the Muthanga incident. The list contains the names of 18 women and children from the Chaligadda colony in Mananthavadi taluk, three from Mulanthara colony, two each from Chemmad and Mechana colonies, 10 from Murikkaladi colony, five each from Chelur and Thinur colonies, seven from Mavadi colony and 14 from Thiruvannur colony. The list of missing women and children were prepared after the survey conducted in the tribal colonies by the Wayanad Human Rights protection committee. Expressing solidarity with the cause of the Adivasis, the Vedi leaders said a team had visited Muthanga on February 26 and 27 for an on-the-spot study. The Vedi demanded a judicial probe headed by a sitting judge and measures to rehabilitate the Adivasis who had been released from prison. The Vedi leaders questioned the stand taken by the State Women's Commission on the Adivasi issue and demanded that the Government dismantle the Commission.
