State to have more phone lines

SHIMOGA March 5. K. Padmanabhan, Chief General Manager (Telecommunications), BSNL Karnataka Circle, Bangalore, said here on Wednesday that during 2002-2003, it was proposed to add five lakh telephone lines in the State. Three lakh lines had already been added.

At a press conference, he said that now, it was proposed to add four lakh more lines, including WLL and mobile connections. The number of proposed mobile connections was 1.2 lakh.

The WLL service had been commissioned in Bangalore, Mysore, Tumkur, Kolar, and Hassan, and it would be extended to other cities by September. The voicemail service now available in Bangalore, Mangalore, and Mysore would be extended soon.

Noting that telephone connections and bandwidth were being given on demand, Mr. Padmanabhan said the phone-on-phone facility was available in Bangalore, Hassan, Mysore, Raichur, Bellary, Shimoga, Davangere, Chikmagalur, Mangalore, and Hubli. It was proposed to open teleshoppe in Mysore, Mangalore, Hassan, and Tumkur. The Intelligent Network (IN) services would be extended throughout the State and the Centrex facility would be introduced in all district headquarters.

He said BSNL's annual investment in the State had been Rs.1,000 crore in the past four or five years. The Karnataka Circle earned an annual revenue of Rs.2,200 crore, which was 10 per cent of the national revenue.

Mr. Padmanabhan said there were 2,674 telephone exchanges with a capacity of 33.58 lakh lines and 27.31 lakh connections in the State.

As much as 2,5160 km. of optical fibre cable had been laid to connect all exchanges on stable media. Seven software firms and corporates used 5,878 data circuits to various national and international destinations from Bangalore alone.
