On the eve of his return after he had successfully completed the job and instilling hope in Sita of Her rescue early, Hanuman made it a point to meet Ravana by inviting himself to his palace. The demon-king could not contain his anger at the havoc he had created and his praise of Rama's valour. He decided to execute him but he narrowly missed death by timely intervention of good counsellors and instead was punished by setting fire to his tail. His devotion to Rama and Sita enabled him to come out unscathed in such life-threatening situations. In his discourse, Kalyanapuram Sri R.Aravamudan said, when Hanuman conveyed the good news of having located Sita and handed the ornament given by Her to Rama, the Lord was overjoyed. Only Garuda, Vayu and Hanuman had all the qualities necessary to accomplish such a difficult task like crossing the ocean and searching for Sita's whereabouts in a heavily guarded place like Lanka. Grateful that he had saved the entire race of Raghu from dishonour by finding Sita, Rama immediately expressed it by hugging him and saying, "It undoubtedly wrings my soul further, wretched that I am, to think that I cannot do a kindly act worthy of Hanuman, who has communicated to me this delightful news. This embrace, which is all that I can call my own at this moment, is unreservedly offered to you." There can be doubt that Hanuman merited such a singular blessing as to have been of service to the Lord Himself during His incarnation and earning His gratitude, only by his sterling devotion to the Divine couple. Sita also had earlier on hearing about the punishment meted to him by Ravana prayed to the fire-god to spare Hanuman.
