This Day That Age
Diplomatic quarters in Karachi said Foreign Minister Zafrullah Khan had tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Khwaja Nazimuddin, following serious civil disorder in West Punjab, with fanatical demonstrations against the Ahmediya Muslim sect to which be belonged. Lahore continued to be in a state of grave turmoil. After curfew was lifted on the 5th morning, anti-Ahmediya demonstrators went on the rampage, loudly shouting "Qadiani Hai Hai", and "Zafrullah Khan Hai Hai" The authorities re-imposed curfew from 3.30 p.m. The Mall, the main business centre, which had been the converging point for demonstrators for five days, lay deserted. Government offices and schools were closed, and others followed suit deciding to close for at least a week. Informed circles suggested that the grace disorders stemmed from Government's mismanagement of agriculture and food supply, and the people's understandable worry and justified concern over the food crisis in the Punjab.
