Abolish phone rental

Sir, — It is not only the STD booth owners who are cheated by the BSNL but also the middle-class people who want the rent for telephone connection totally abolished. The reduction in long distance charges has only helped the commercial users and corporates, whereas an average person has to pay an amount equal to long distance charge for even the local call, if it is worked out. If it is to help everyone, let the department give up the rent system and collect a service charge proportionate to the number of calls with the rate decreasing while the number of call increases with a minimum slab. While doing so they can even nullify the free calls system as it is only an eyewash.

It is no good on the part of the telecom department to reduce the long distance charges because a closer scrutiny will reveal that about 25 to 30 per cent of the long distance calls are made during off peak time and the department may think that the drop in earnings could be made up by increasing tariffs in other segments.
