MCD's e-service begins

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI FEB. 19. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today inaugurated the interactive and dynamic website of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi -- http://www.mcdonline.gov.in -- and the innovative Citizen Services Bureau (CSB) of the civic body.

Ushering in a new era towards providing e-service to people of the Capital, Delhiites can now instantly get the registration of deaths and births and the certificates issued, book a park, make any type of payment to the civic body and renew licenses. On the internet, they can register deaths and births, apply for issue of licenses, book for park and lodge a complaint. While the services have been launched in three zones, it would be expanded to entire Capital in the next three months.

Computerised registration of deaths have been also been now made possible at the cremation grounds of civic body at Nigambodh Ghat, Bela Road, Panchkuian Road, Punjabi Bagh, Subhash Nagar and Sat Nagar.

Speaking at the inaugural function at Lajpat Bagar in South Delhi this evening, Ms. Dikshit termed it as a red-letter day in the history of the MCD. "This is a historic day for civic body. This day would be remembered by people as beginning of the end of harassment in the MCD,'' she said. Impressed by the website and the CSB, Ms. Dikshit said the centre in the future would also be used by people for payment of electricity and water bills.

The Delhi Mayor, Jaishree Panwar, asserted that this would bring transparency in the functioning of the MCD and would end a lot of harassment to the people. "The Congress in the MCD is committed to work for the welfare of the people. In a short span of just 11 months we have taken a number of steps to improve the functioning of the MCD. Our determination to implement the unit area method for assessment of property tax is another important one,'' she said.

The Leader of the House and Standing Committee Chairman, Ram Babu Sharma, said the Congress-rule was trying to bring the "MCD on line'' during its 11 months' tenure.

Giving details of the MCD website and the CSB, the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, said: "This is merely a beginning. A lot of other services and more CSBs would be opened up in days to come.'' Once a person fills up the requisite forms and makes the payment at the CSB, the desired certificate would reach him / her within ten days from the date of payment.

While in initial phase these CSBs would be open from 8 a. m. to 12-30 p.m., citizens of Delhi can avail the MCD services from any where in the world round the clock through the website. They can make online payments of taxes through their credit card. The civic body has tied up with the Bank of Punjab for this.

In afternoon, the centre would be used to provide computer training to the municipal staff beginning March 1. About 4,500 municipal employees are expected to be trained in basic computer literacy over the next one year.
