Poor response to BKU bandh call

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH FEB. 19. A bandh call issued by Bharatiya Kisan Union activists today failed to evoke much response in any part of Haryana.

An official spokesman of the Haryana police said here this evening that flow of traffic on roads in the State was smooth and unobstructed.

``Effective nakabandi was carried out intensively and there was constant patrolling. Also, security of public life and property was ensured,'' the spokesman added.

However, some miscreants were noticed in small numbers at places like Garhi, Manas, Mohna, Kultana and Shimla in Kaithal district, Pabnava in Kurukshetra district, Kandela in Jind district, Khanda in Hisar district, Kanheri in Fatehabad district and Bhalot and Titoli in Rohtak district. According to reliable sources, a few BKU activists tried to block the roads but gave up the attempt seeing the lacklustre response from the villagers. The bandh virtually fizzled out by noon.

The call for the bandh was given by BKU at its rally held at Kalayat village in Kaithal district on February 16 to press its demands. Among other things, BKU is demanding the unconditional release of its supremo, Ghasi Ram Nain, who was arrested in connection with the farmers' agitation at Shahjadpur in Ambala recently.
