Tamil Nadu-Chennai

The traders observed fast opposite the Government Estate in Triplicane from the morning to evening, alleging that the Commissioner and his vigilance squad removed articles displayed by roadside shops from the pavements. The traders are not able to retrieve the articles even after giving an assurance at the Ripon Buildings not to repeat the mistake. Also, the Corporation has been insisting on the payment of 25 per cent of licence fee as conservancy charges from this year. "The levy of conservancy charges must not target the small traders who generate very less amount of garbage. Instead, it must target the commercial houses and bigger establishments," the Peravai representatives said. The recent decision of the civic agency to collect "administrative charges" from people who were found littering the streets also drew a flak. Meanwhile, Mr.Kalaivanan, who spoke to mediapersons at the Ripon Buildings, asserted that "Removal of encroachments from pavements or levy of administrative fee are not efforts to harrass the public or traders. For a long time, the Corporation had not initiated such measures. So now they might appear to be harsh but all the citizens have a responsibility towards the city," he added.
