An EC observer, D.P.S. Nagal, began the probe into the alleged distribution of freebies yesterday in the villages of Alwarthirunagari taluk. As photographs were published of Malavarayanatham women showing sarees they had received, the observer visited the hamlet too and conducted an enquiry. But, the villagers are said to have claimed that self-help groups had purchased the synthetic sarees and that they were not given by the AIADMK. However, two more observers are continuing the enquiry to find out why the SHGs alone chose to buy sarees of a few designs and colours, wrapped in identical plastic covers, at this juncture and where from they were bought. The observers are expected to submit their report tomorrow. Unless any ofthe villagers reveals the source of the sarees, it will be difficult to ascertain the reports, say EC sources.
