Security for Srinath's house as fans take out procession

By Our Staff Correspondent

Mysore Feb. 18. The city police on Tuesday provided security to the family of fast bowler, Javagal Srinath, and posted two guards at his residence as a precautionary measure in view of the growing disenchantment among cricket fans with India's performance at the World Cup in South Africa. Irate cricket fans in the city took out a procession and staged a demonstration against the pathetic performance of the Indian team in the ongoing tournament. The fans, led by Adarsha Vidyarthi Kriya Samithi, expressed their indignation at the players' inability to put up a fight. They termed the display against Australia on Saturday as an "insult to India".

The fans demanded that the Indian team withdraw from the tournament if there was no improvement in its current performance. Similar views were expressed by a cross section of the people at the venue most of whom had a "word of advice" for the Indian cricket players. They repeated the now familiar counsel that the players should spend more time concentrating on the game rather than spending time in the studio shooting commercials. The performance against Holland came in for flak and many feared that the victory against the Dutch team could as well turn out to be the only victory for India given the players' state of mind and form.

The police said that although they did not expect any threat to Srinath or his family members in the city, they did not want to take any chances as threat perception would increase if India crashed out of the tournament. But the rage of the irate fans was directed at batsmen rather than bowlers who did not have a decent score to defend. They burnt a poster of spinner Anil Kumble and Srinath along with posters of .batsmen, including .Sourav Ganguly, and Sachin Tendulkar.
