Journalists' plea to Govt.

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Feb. 18. The Karnataka Union of Working Journalists, which held its 25th annual conference in Koppal on Monday, has urged the Government to ensure the implementation of the Justice Manisana Singh Wage Board recommendations for journalists and non-journalists by all the newspapers in the State.

In a resolution, the Union noted that some of the newspapers had failed to implement the recommendations of the wage board, which was the fourth set up by the Union Government. The President of the Union, Gudihalli Nagaraj, released the resolutions adopted at the conference.

The Union demanded a ban on the system of contract employment of journalists adopted by some of the bigger newspapers. The other demands put forth by the Union included increase in the honorarium paid to journalists by the Government from Rs.500 to Rs.1,500 a month, setting up of a Rs.1-crore welfare fund for journalists as in Gujarat, allotment of free sites by the Government to journalists working in rural areas as in Andhra Pradesh.
