Panangad bags best grama panchayat award

KASARAGOD FEB. 18. The Panangad grama panchayat in Kozhikode district has been chosen the best grama panchayat in the State for 2001-2002.

The Kasaragod Municipality has been elected as the best among the municipalites in the State. The Tirur municipality and the Nedumangadi municipality bagged the second and third place respectively.

Among the district panchayats, the Kasaragod District Panchayat has emerged as the best in the State. The award for the best Corporation has not been finalised.

The Elamdesam block panchayat in Idukki district has been adjudged the best among the block panchayats in the State. The Sasthamkotta block panchayat in Kollam district and the Sulthan Bathery block panchayat in Wayanad district were chosen the second and third best block panchayats, respectively.

The best grama panchayat and the one that bagged the second place in each district are as follows - Thiruvananathapuram: Anaad, Perugadavila; Kollam: Mainagapally, Sooranad; Alapuzha: Cheriyanadu, Ambalapuzha (South); Pathanamthitta: Ranni, Vallikod; Kottayam: Kozhuvanal, Teekoy; Idukki: Chakkupallam, Udumpannur; Eranakulam: Edavanakkad, Valakam; Thrissur: Koozhur, Adaat; Palakad: Sreekrishnapuram, Thiruvegapura; Kozhikode: Chemancherry, Madavoor; Wayanad: Kaniaymbatta, Ambalavayal; Kannur: Mangattidam, Munderi; Kasaragod: Chemmanad, Mangalpadi.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, the Minister for Local Administration, Cherkalam Abdulla, said the best panchayat will be awarded the Swaraj Trophy and a cash prize of Rs.5 lakhs. In addition, the panchayat will also get Rs.25 lakhs as special plan fund.

The grama panchayats, which excelled in the district-level, will get a cash prize of Rs.one lakh each besides Rs.10 lakhs as special plan fund. The panchayats, which came second in the district-level, will get Rs.5 lakhs as special plan fund besides a merit certificate, the Minsiter said.

Besides presenting Swaraj Trophies and merit certificates, the block panchayats and municipalities elected for the awards will also get a cash prize of Rs.25 lakhs for the first, Rs.15 lakhs for the second and Rs.10 lakhs for the third best panchayats.

The best District Panchayat and the best Corporation (to be decided and announced later) will be awarded the Swaraj Trophies and merit certificates, Mr.Cherkalam Abdulla said.

He said the entries were scrutinised and selected of awards made by a judging committee, presided over by the Rural Development Principal Secretary and comprising the Local Administration Secretary, Planning Secretary, the Planning Board member, Rural Development Commissioner and the Municipal Director.
