Announcing this here today, a press release of the DSC Centre said that the conference was being held to discuss and decide on future perspective, both long and short-term, of important aspects related to organisational and structural changes, additional raisings of DSC platoons underway, grouping of the platoon into companies and human resource development and management. On February 24, the conference will take up departmental matters for in-house solutions with a view to enhancing and improving the existing standards of training, administration and performance within the parametres of present capabilities and scope, it said. A display by the reputed team of motorcycle riders from ASC Bangalore and other functions will be held at the Jawahar Municipal Stadium here on February 25, the release said. The origin of the DSC could be traced to the post-World War Two situation where the Government was faced with the problem of protecting numerous depots, factories and installations of the Defence Department. A security force -- Defence Department Constabulary - under the Ministry of Defence was raised at Mathura, U.P. on April 25, 1947, from among the ex-servicemen on the model of the War Department Constabulary in the U.K. The constabulary was moved to Delhi in the following month. The corps was a semi-police force with police titles and badges of ranks at the time of its raising till it was reorganised and re-designated a Ministry of Defence Security Corps (MDSC) in 1948 with military titles and badges of ranks. The MDSC was again reorganised and re-designated as the DSC and brought under the control of the Army Headquarter in August 1958. The DSC Centre and Records moved from Delhi to Chakrata in U.P. in 1959 and then to this town in November 21, 1961. The role of the DSC is to protect defence units/installations against minor sabotage and pilferage. The press note said that in the prevailing law and order situation in the country, the task of the DSC had become more difficult and challenging. The DSC personnel were deployed in militancy-infested areas, difficult and inhospitable terrains. During the last year, personnel of the corps had been awarded one Shaurya Chakra, three Vayu Sena medals, two COAS commendation cards, and one AOC-in-C commendation card for bravery and daring act beyond the call of duty, it said.
