This Day That Age
Professor P. Sambamurthi, Head, Department of Music in the University of Madras, presided over a function in Vijayawada to present a purse of Rs. 4,000 to Sir Aripirala Satyanarayanamurti to enable him to publish his manuscripts in Telugu a dictionary of musical terms, and a rendering of the Sangeetha Kala Pradarsin. Prof. Sambamurthi said it was sad that, unlike in the West the general public in India did not evince proper interest in studying music and music literature. To conserve India's rich and varied music heritage, he made a number of suggestions. The speaker wanted a University of Fine Arts to be set up at the Centre, and similar bodies in the states. There should also be facilities to teach diploma courses in stage-craft in all States. Full-fledged galleries of musical instruments should be instituted, as exhibiting the instruments in museums devoted to many other fields, was not adequate. Professor Sambamurthi also wanted a Central Library of music books and manuscripts to be started and well-maintained, where research could be undertaken. Valuable compositions were available in manuscript in many parts of the country, and unless collected, transcribed and recorded, they would be lost forever. Finally he said that there should be permanent organisation to conduct national festivals of music and dance, and that India should participate in the deliberations of the International Music Council under the auspices of UNESCO.
