Bangladesh to recall Akram Khan

BENONI FEB. 18. Bangladesh is seeking the International Cricket Council's permission to replace injured medium pacer Mashrafee Mortaza with former captain Akram Khan, team manager Abu Sharif Faruque said on Tuesday.

Mortaza, 19, suffered a freak injury when he twisted his right ankle during Monday's net session. But the gravity of the injury was revealed only after X-rays revealed a bad ligament tear that requires surgery.

``Mashrafee might be out of action for three months and we've sought that Akram Khan be allowed to join the squad,'' Faruque told AP.

The twisted ankle was a big blow to Bangladesh's leading seam bowler, who made his comeback in the World Cup after being sidelined for a year with a back strain and leg injury.

``Mashrafee will stay in South Africa as the orthopedic surgeon wants to observe him for five days before deciding whether or not he should be operated upon,'' Faruque said.
