Bandh peaceful in Raichur

By Our Staff Correspondent

RAICHUR FEB. 18. Raichur bandh was observed here today in response to a call given by the district unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the wake of the murder of president of party's district unit, Khallel Khan, alias Murgi Khaleel. The bandh was total and peaceful.

Mr.Khaleel was shot dead allegedly by a rival group on Monday while he was about to step into his party office near the Deputy Commissioner's office here. The culprits fled in a car after the crime.

The activists of the BSP, led by M.Veerupakshi, State General Secretary of the party, staged a dharana in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office today. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding that the Government arrest the assailants at the earliest. Shops and other business establishments in most parts of the city remained closed.

Only a few petty shops and medical shops were open. The wholesale business at Patel Road and Rajendra Gunj Market Yard was suspended.

The thoroughfares in the city looked deserted following the cancellation city bus services. Autorikshaws were off the road. Most schools and colleges declared a holiday and many nationalised banks remained closed for the day. Even some Union Government offices, including the Head Post Office, did not function.

The main bus station in the city wore a deserted look as the NEKRTC withdrew its services.

Police forces were deployed at the bus station and other important places in the city to maintain law and order.
