According to the citation, Ms. Manjula, is the only non-resident Indian to be conferred the State's Kalaimamani title in 1999, in recognition of her role in promoting the art form in Europe. Danseuse Padma Subramaniam said Ms. Manjula was a perfectionist who had not ``lost traditional values of the Hindu society. Her commitment to religion, art and way of life'' was why she has been in the field for two decades.'' Ms. Manjula said the award was ``an honour for dancers who live abroad and work to preserve this ancient art form, one of the beautiful gifts that India had to give to the world.''
