Junior Indian team for Malaysian meet

BANGALORE Jan. 3. An 18-member Indian hockey team will participate in the Malaysian Hockey Federation's under-19 international invitation championship which gets underway at Kuala Lumpur from January 5 to 12. The team, led by Prabodh Tirkey of Indian Airlines, will leave from Bangalore.

Announcing the squad here on Friday, Mr. K.P.S. Gill, president Indian Hockey Federation, expressed his satisfaction with the composition of the squad and the manner in which the youngsters played in the final trials here at the KSHA Stadium. He expressed hope that the team would fare well in the four-nation meet. Besides India and Malaysia, Pakistan and Korea are in the fray.

It will be a hectic season for the Indian seniors and juniors in 2003. He said, "we have a hectic season - Azlan Shah tournament, Champions Trophy, Asia Cup (under-21), and Afro Asian Games, while the juniors have the Junior Asian Cup.''

The squad: Goalkeepers: Aldrin D'Souza (BPCL) and Pfokorelo (CoE, Bangalore). Full-backs: K.P. Roy (CoE), William Xalco (Orissa) and Alfred Aseer (Tamil Nadu). Midfielders: Vinay (Indian Airlines), Navpreet Singh (Punjab & Sind Bank Academy), Nitin (Air-India), Vivek Gupta (ONGC), Prabodh Tirkey (IA), Jagat Jothi (TN) and Jitender Pal Singh (PSBA). Forwards: Tushar Khadekar (BPCL), Gurucharan Singh (Namdhari), Hari Prasad (CoE), Saravanan (TN), Imtiaz (UP) and Sandeep (Air-India Academy).

Coaches: Harendra Singh (chief coach-IA) and Clarence Lobo (Tatas). Officials: Dr. Saju Joseph (physio-SAI), Maj. Manish Banbha (manager-NSG), H. Sangha (umpire-Punjab), Malar Selvan (judge-TN) and Pradeep Dutta (trainer).

The schedule: Jan. 5: India v Pakistan and Malaysia v Korea; Jan. 6: India v Malaysia and Korea v Malaysia PS; Jan. 7: Malaysia PS v Pakistan; Jan. 8: India v Korea and Pakistan v Malaysia; Jan. 9: Malaysia v Malaysia PS; Jan. 10: India v Malaysia PS and Korea v Pakistan. Jan 11: rest day; Jan. 12: Third and fourth classification match and final.
