Literary awards announced

Belgaum Jan. 3. The Belgavi Jilla Sahitya Pratisthan has announced its annual Kannada literary awards. Atmasakshiya Havaligalu written by Vijayendra Patil of Belgaum and Neera Mattu Panebella Uddime by Swami Bhaktiteerth of Hukkeri have been chosen for the Sirigannada Prashasti-2002 which carries a cash prize of Rs.1,500.

Seven awards instituted by philanthropists have also been announced. M. Akbar Ali, noted writer, will be honoured for lifetime achievement with the Prahalad Kumar Bhagoji Award. The Shri S.M. Kulkarni Shastabdi Samithi Award for creative writing goes to Bharati Torgall for his Sasar Samsara, and the Dr. Hanmantrao Savanur Smarak Award for stories and novels to H.I. Timmapur for his Muttu Kittavaru. Yadunath Karaveer will get the Ramarao Shirahatti Smarak Prashasti for the maiden work of a writer for his book, Nanondu Phoenix.

The Shri P. Vijaykumar Datti Prashasti for religious and children's literature will be given to B.B. Turmandi for his work, Acharya Kalpataru. Neelganga Charantimath has been selected for the Chandravva Dharmaji Angol Smarak Prashasti for women's writing for her book, Sangram. The Sridevi Dasappa Shanbhag Smarak Prashasti for translation goes to Sandhya Deshpande's Chapa.

Basangoud Patil of Sankeshwar and Mahadevappa H. Kittur of Belgaum would be honoured with the Sirigannada Gourav in recognition of their social works. Announcing these awards here on Friday, Vijay Tergundi, President of the pratishtan, and Srinivas Kulkarni, Founder Member, said a panel of prominent litterateurs selected the works for giving the of awards. The panellists were S. Vidyashankar of Bangalore, Shyamsundar Bidarkundi of Gadag, A.R. Toro of Kolhapur, and Chandrakant Pukli of Bedkinal. Thirty-six works came up for selection.
