New York Times terms Naidu as promising leader

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Dec. 30. The New York Times, in its edition dated December 27, has a report on Hyderabad and praised the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, who has "moved decisively to transform Hyderabad from a quiet administrative centre of an agricultural state into a computer programming and pharmaceutical hub.''

A statement released from the Chief Minister's office quotes the report, titled "A High Tech Fix for One Corner of India'', as having said that "in a country bedevilled by populists pursuing short term fixes, Mr. Naidu (has) emerged a promising leader not just in India but in the developing world.''

The report goes on to state that "Mr. Naidu's successes have made him a hit for the last six years at the World Economic Forum meetings...where he was been praised as an example for other leaders of poor regions.''

Patting Mr. Naidu further, the report has been quoted to say, "Andhra Pradesh is becoming an international model for certain public policies'' and says that he was one of India's first politician to "tackle a problem that has effectively bankrupted most of the country's State governments -- electricity subsidies.''

The article is also quoted as having praised Mr. Naidu's ability to maintain communal harmony and his "vision of efficient government''. It also mentions his "uncommon political nimbleness and even ruthlessness that got him to the top in the first place.''
