Clearance for new garbage contracts in 15 days: Mayor

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Dec. 30. The Mayor, C.M.Nagaraj, on Monday informed the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council that the new garbage contracts, that were awaiting the Government's approval, would come into effect within the next 15 days.

Replying to members at the BMP Council meeting held here on Monday, he said the Commissioner was trying to get the contracts cleared at the Government level. The process was delayed as the existing contactors had approached the court seeking an extension of their term. The Court had disposed the petition asking the contractors to file objections before the Government, the Commissioner, M.R.Sreenivas Murthy said. He said the Government had received some objections and they were being examined before approving the new contracts.

Earlier, H.Jayaram (Congress) complained that the existing contractors were not neglecting work after the new contracts were awarded. "The pourakarmikas are not given brooms, baskets, and other material for cleaning and sweeping the roads. We are paying them for the work. They have to perform effectively till the last day of their contract," he said and blamed the Health Officials for not monitoring the contractors. The Commissioner replied that care would be taken to ensure that the City's cleaning was not effected.

Grade separator

The Mayor assured the members that work on the grade separator near Rajajinagar Entrance would commence within the next 15 days. He was replying to members, who complained over the delay in execution of work. V.Nagaraj, Sevashram corporator, sought to know from the officers whether they had granted permission to the organisers of the National Consumer Fair to put up structures on the Minerva Mill grounds near Sujatha cinema in Rajajinagar. The Deputy Commissioner (West), Kongwad, said the organisers had applied for permission and it was being examined. However, the Health officials had given a "No Objection Certificate (NOC)" to the organisers. "If they have put up any structures, they will be demolished," he said.

National College flyover

B.S.Satyanarayana (BJP) urged the Mayor to convince the people of Basavangudi on the feasibility of the National College flyover. "Please make a presentation on how the flyover will ease traffic at the junction. This will convince the people of Basavangudi who are against the construction of the flyover," he added.
