Cattle meant for slaughter rescued

By P. Oppili

CHENNAI DEC. 30. Over 100 buffaloes, packed into six lorries, meant for slaughter in Kerala, were rescued by animal welfare activists near Tambaram, on the city outskirts, today.

The rescued animals were housed in the Govardhan Goshala near Guduvancheri in Kancheepuram district.

According to volunteers of the People for Animals (PfA), on a tip-off, a vehicular check was conducted on the GST Road near Tambaram. A Special Patrol Force from the Chengalpattu East police district helped the activists in conducting the check.

The operation began around Sunday midnight and went on till 6 a.m. today.

The activists found the cattle suffocating in six trucks, including two mini-lorries. While more than 20 animals were packed in each lorry, about 10 buffaloes were loaded in each mini-lorry, the PfA volunteers said.

The cattle were purchased from a shandy near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh and were headed for the cattle shandy in Pollachi, from where they would be again illegally transported to the slaughterhouses in Kerala, the activists said.

Cases were filed against the traders.

The police arrested 12 persons and seized the vehicles.
