TN wins, but fails to garner bonus point

CHENNAI DEC. 30. Tamil Nadu defeated Gujarat by nine wickets about 10 minutes before tea on the third day of the four-day Ranji Trophy elite group B encounter at the Chidambaram Stadium here on Monday, but failed to garner the bonus point that comes with an innings or a 10-wicket win.

The host's victory (two points) was never in doubt, especially after it had gained a first innings lead of 99 and reduced the visitor to 130 for six in its second essay at stumps on day two. But it failed in clinching that extra point.

The host, a strong contender for a semifinal slot, has six points from four matches with away rounds against Assam (Jan. 25-28) and Punjab (Feb. 1-4) remaining. Gujarat has two from an equal number of encounters.

Overnight batsmen, skipper Mukund Parmar (75, 226m, 10x4) and Bhavin Mehta (68, 171m, 11x4), added 61 today in a display of grit and gumption to take their seventh-wicket stand to 113. Mediumpacer G. Vignesh (two for 38) had the former leg-before and a while later, mediumpacer L. Balaji, who went on to claim his sixth consecutive five wickets in an innings haul and third straight 10 wickets in a match haul, clean bowled Mehta. But the breakthroughs came a trifle late, so to say.

The host's target was 130. It was a test of patience for the opening pair of left-hander S. Ramesh and skipper S. Suresh, who had provided the side with a 100-run start in the first innings. They got to 77, when Ramesh was stumped by Pallav Vora, giving left-arm spinner Kalpesh Patel the charge. Suresh went on to score his second half century of the match, in the company of southpaw Sriram.

In an elite group A contest in Vijayawada, defending champion Indian Railways' batting guns boomed with Amit Pagnis (92), Raza Ali (74 batting) and skipper Abhay Sharma (89 batting) striking hot and the side is just five runs away from gaining first innings honours over Andhra with six wickets in hand.

In another elite group A contest, mediumpacers Sanjay Gill (six for 33) and Amit Bhandari (three for 75) bowled Delhi to an innings win over Rajasthan.

In Vadodara, host Baroda strengthened its chances of qualifying from elite group B with a seven-wicket win over Assam.

In the plate championship, Dodda Ganesh's match-haul of 12 for 89 guided Karnataka to an innings win over Haryana in group B.
