'New strategy to ensure funds, knowhow'

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD DEC. 30. Inspired by the Irish example, the Andhra Pradesh Government is working towards creation of a model that would ensure continuous flow of investments and technologies into the State. Discussions on evolving such a model are now on, according to the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu.

He was speaking at a unique `Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) working session with the Chief Minister,' organised by the Government here on Monday, as a prelude to the `Partnership Summit,' to be held here from January 5.

The objective of the CEOs' conclave was to facilitate interaction with industrialists, showcase the Government's initiatives in various sectors of the economy, and elicit opinions and suggestions from the cross section of industrialists.

Another major objective, which, however, did not occupy centre-stage and got sidelined eventually, was to place before the industrialists a list of `sick industries' in the State so that some of them could be picked up for rehabilitation. A list of 115 companies was circulated. As it turned out, 180 companies were represented at the conclave.

Reacting to suggestions, Mr. Naidu said he was prepared to constitute a `task force' for the textile sector. He advised the auto component manufacturers to form an association and work out an incentive package, and assured promoting their cause.

The issue of natural gas suddenly assumed great importance for the industrialists after the discovery of huge resources (potential of 7 trillion cubic feet) in the Krishna-Godavari off-shore area by the Reliance Industries Limited.

Mr. Naidu told them that the State Government had set up an expert committee under the chairmanship of T.L. Shankar, and advised industrialists to make suggestions for use of natural gas in Andhra Pradesh.

This time the Chief Minister's presentation got a new name `LEAP 21-Leadership and Excellence for Andhra Pradesh in the 21st Century,' which covered the entire gamut of initiatives taken by the Government for development of the State.
