Power tariff hike unlikely next year

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD DEC. 30. Power tariff hike is not likely for users in the domestic, commercial and agriculture sectors for the financial year beginning April 1.

The tariff proposals for the year over which the AP Transco is doing last-minute exercise before finalisation envisage increase in the slabs in the industrial sector to four from two with a small reduction in the rates applicable to the last two slabs. Relief to the industrial sector has been contemplated to divert industries to the AP Transco grid from captive units of private parties.

The Transco is submitting the tariff proposals and Annual Revenue Requirement Report for 2003-2004 tomorrow to the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission. They were put forth before the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at a meeting here today by the Transco officials led by the CMD, Rachel Chatterjee.

Sources in the Transco said that the subsidy by the Government would be cut down to about Rs. 1,100 crores from last year's Rs. 1,560 crores.

The gap would be bridged by internal efficiency improvement to the tune of Rs. 1,000 crores.
