Rupee scales another peak

MUMBAI DEC. 30. Sustained robust corporate and trade inflows drove the rupee sharply higher against the U.S. currency today, scaling yet another record peak for the current calendar year even as the dollar's slide against other units strengthened it further.

In fairly active two-way trade at the interbank foreign exchange (forex) market, the rupee closed at Rs. 47.9350/94 a dollar, a steep 5-1/2 paise gain from last Friday's close of Rs. 47.99/9950, which was the year's earlier high. It opened on a firm footing at Rs. 47.96/97 a dollar and touched intraday highs of Rs. 47.92/93.
