Sangma shocks Abhijit

By Our Sports Reporter

KOLKATA DEC. 30. Rahul Sangma of Goodricke National Chess Academy put the brakes on top-seeded Abhijit Gupta's progress beating him in the 10th round of the boys' under-13 section of the XVI National children's chess held at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Monday.

Gupta, cruising along as the leader since the first round, was pipped in the penultimate round by a dogged Sangma in the battle on the top board.

Tamil Nadu's T.U. Navin Kanna, who won his 10th round game on the second board, emerged as the new leader with 9 points — a clear one-point lead over Gupta. A draw against P. Saravana Krishnan of Chromepet Chess Academy on Tuesday will be enough to give Navin Kanna the title.

Gupta and Krishnan are in second position with 8 points each.

In the boys' under-11 section three players — R. Ashwath, Y. Sandeep and Yuzvendra S. Chahal — shared the lead with eight points each after the 10th round.

With the top two boards in the girls' under-13 category returning draws a single leader failed to emerge as third-seeded N. Raghavi of Tamil Nadu and Orissa girl Kiran Manisha Mohanti shared the lead with 8 points each. Another Tamil Nadu girl J. Raja Surya was in the second spot with 7.5 points.

The girls' under-11 section too failed to have a single leader as top-seeded I. Ramya Krishna of Andhra Pradesh joined State-mate and overnight leader Monogna Mandhava on top to tie on 8 points each.
