Sir, — The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, flayed all talks of "Hindu rashtra" and cautioned against making Hindutva an electoral issue. At the same time, the BJP chief, Venkaiah Naidu, categorically said that the Hindutva card was there to stay. It is all doubletalk, playing on the ambiguity of the words "Hindu" and "Hindutva". No one in this country has any ill feeling towards Hindus or Hindutva. It is the fundamentalist organisations such as the VHP which have given Hindutva a new meaning of hatred. Perhaps, Mr. Vajpayee was right in saying that the BJP is the only party which can drink the poison and survive. Just as the poison was contained in the neck of Lord Shiva, the poison will be contained in Gujarat and not be allowed to spread to the rest of the country. A. Jacob Sahayam, Thiruvananthapuram
