The Orissa batsman had been given specific permission to stay back for the first match, on a request from the team management, since the injury-hit Indian side was short of a batsman. Coach John Wright revealed that off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (bowling arm) and all-rounder Sanjay Bangar (wrenched knee) were recovering well from the injuries. The two are likely to be fit for the Napier encounter, the second of the series, on December 29. The side now also has the option of a paceman in Baroda's Rakesh Patel, who, at last, joined the team. However, the indications from the team management were that a decision on Sachin Tendulkar's injured ankle would be taken only on Saturday. The Mumbai batsman was forced to miss the opening match.
