The Punjab Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister, Jagmohan Singh Kang, today said that the State was contributing about 10 per cent of the country's milk production and it wanted to make use of the surplus milk available in the State. If private dairy industrialists set up their units in Punjab it would help dairy farmers to get a better price for their produce. The Punjab Government, he said was ready to provide necessary infrastructure to the dairy industrialists. Meanwhile, it was also planning to set up a separate veterinary university in Punjab similar to the one existing in Tamil Nadu. His visit to Tamil Nadu was to study the working of the Veterinary University, the first of its kind in the country, so that it could be replicated in Punjab. "A separate veterinary university would help get more UGC funds to the State for research work on animal husbandry." The Punjab Government, the Minister said, wanted to help farmers to diversify their activities to get additional income. With surplus foodgrains production, he said the farmers had to look for allied agriculture activities to augment their income. The proposed university would help them suggest farm-allied programmes to the farmers. The Government wanted to develop freshwater fishing in the State in a big way and would give subsidy to fishermen. In this connection, Punjab was also planning to set up a fishermen training institute, he said.
