Tribals protest `eviction'

BHUBANESWAR DEC. 27. A large number tribal men and women from different parts of Orissa staged a demonstration here today demanding that they should not be evicted from the jungles in view of the recent Supreme Court order.

The demonstration was organised by Gana Abhiyan Orissa.

The tribals, who were armed with their traditional weapons, were addressed by Mayadhar Nayak, president of the abhiyan.

In an open letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the abhiyan demanded that the tribals should not be driven away from the jungles and instead be given permanent land "pattas".

The Centre should safeguard the fundamental rights of the tribals, the abhiyan said.
