By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 27. An extremely "figure-conscious'' Delhi Police managed to keep its crime registers in shape during the year now drawing to a close, claiming almost a 10 per cent decline in the crime rate for the fourth consecutive year.

A triumphant yet circumspect Delhi Police Commissioner, Radhey Shyam Gupta, told mediapersons at the annual media interaction here yesterday that the statistics for this year, updated till December 15, show a decline of 10.93 per cent in heinous cases and a decrease of 9.13 per cent in non-heinous cases, the average standing at 9.21 per cent. The maximum drop was witnessed in incidents of robbery -- 468 as against 580 last year -- accompanied by a decrease in non-heinous crime closely connected to robbery. Against 661 cases of snatchings in 2001, 596 were reported this year. In respect of burglary and other thefts, this year saw a decrease of 22.44 per cent and 19.53 per cent, respectively.

Mr. Gupta asserted that pro-active policing and preventive action taken by the police made it possible. Of the heinous criminal cases reported, the police managed to detect 82.23 per cent cases, as against 79.39 per cent for 2001. The over all work-out percentage stood at 60.74 per cent, as against 59.89 per cent last year.

Apart from a satisfactory crime situation, Mr. Gupta enlisted successful tackling of crime against women, specially in the area of eve-teasing and molestation, and counter terrorism measures as the high point.

The Delhi police chief expressed satisfaction at conviction of those accused in the Parliament attack case. "The awarding of death sentences to the accused, barring Afsan Guru, is a testimony to the brilliance and dedication of the police team involved in the operation. It also underlined the effectiveness of the POTA,'' he said.
