The award will be presented to Dr. Murthy in Banavasi on December 29. It comprises a cash prize of Rs. one lakh, a citation, and a memento.
Dr. Murthy was born on May 10, 1931 at Hirekogalur in Channagiri taluk of Shimoga District. He did his B.A. (Hons) in 1953 and post-graduation in Kannada literature in 1957, both in distinction, from the University of Mysore. He was taught, inspired, and encouraged by a number of scholar-teachers such as Kuvempu, D.L. Narasimahachar, K. Vem. Raghavachar, and S. Srikanta Shastry.
He wrote an acclaimed academic paper, "Pampakavi Mattu Maulyaprasara" (Pampa the poet and dissemination of values) while doing his post-graduation. Later, he concentrated on deciphering and interpreting inscriptions from historical, sociological, and cultural perspectives. Under the guidance of the renowned Kannada scholar, Ti. Nam. Srikantiah, he wrote "A cultural study of Kannada inscriptions" for his doctoral degree in 1964. He took voluntary retirement from Bangalore University where he was a Professor of Kannada, to devote his time for research writing in 1990.
Besides his social and pro-Kannada activities, Dr. Murthy has published a number of research papers and books on cultural, sociological, and historical aspects of Kannada language. He won several awards, including the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award and the Rajyotsava Award. In adulation of his achievements in research, his friends and students have instituted Chidananda Award for research. Dr. Murthy was responsible for many cultural and educational projects, and institutions, including Kannada University, Hampi.
