'Politicians' thoughtless actions keep me going'

BANGALORE DEC. 23. R.K.Laxman, noted cartoonist and Ramon Magsaysay Award winner, said here on Monday that "dirty politics, and thoughtless actions and opinions of politicians" had kept his "Common Man'' alive. Speaking after receiving a Special Award of the Karnataka Patrika Academy here, Mr. Laxman said he drew at least two cartoons a day, and he liked to draw cartoons of politicians such as the Prime Minister, A.B.Vajpayee, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and the former Bihar Chief Minister, Laloo Prasad Yadav.

Stating that keen observation was essential to draw cartoons, he said he lived by drawing cartoons on actions taken by the governments. "I feel disgusted if there is no thoughtless actions from politicians,'' he said.

The Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, gave away the Academy's awards for 2002 to 17 other journalists and commended them for their contributions to the field of journalism.

The award winners are K.Sridhar Achar, Vitappa Gorantli, Nasreen Bhura, R.Aravindam, A.Surya Prakash, V.Nagaraj Rao, Shivaraya Doddamani, Ramanna H.Kodihosahalli, K.S.Nagabhooshan, Ramachandraswamy, D.Mahadevappa, T.K.Basavaraju, S.Pattabhiraman, Sarjoo Katkar, G.V.Choodanatha Ayyer, Sripadu D., and N.Jayaram.

The Minister for Health and Information, Kagodu Thimmappa, presided over the function. Mr. Achar spoke.

The President of the Academy, N.Arjun Dev, welcomed the gathering.

The Academy Secretary, H.B.Dinesh, proposed a vote of thanks.
