Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
The ACB DG, A.K. Mohanty, addressing a press conference here on Monday, said it was decided to prosecute the witnesses, who had turned hostile in corruption cases, for perjury. When asked whether the new measure would not deter the public from lodging complaints against the corrupt officials, Mr. Mohanty exuded confidence that it would help in improving conviction percentage. Explaining the action plan for next year, Mr. Mohanty said the `watch and surveillance' activities of the ACB would be strengthened. The staff on watch and surveillance duty would be provided with adequate transport facility to improve their quality of work. In a bid to ease the financial burden on the witnesses who had to travel to depose evidence, the ACB had decided to provide them railway and bus warrants. As per the earlier assurance to reimburse the `trap amounts', the ACB had returned Rs. 6 lakhs of trap amounts to the complainants. The ACB units in the districts would be reorganised and strengthened by next June to facilitate better reach for public. Mr. Mohanty said that the Government was requested to relieve the special courts of ACB of the 4,241 non-ACB cases for speedy trial of corruption related cases.
