Four police teams begin working on clues

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL Dec. 23. The police constituted four special teams to work on the clues gathered at the Bangalore express accident site near Pendekal railway station in Kurnool district. The district police pressed into service their paraphernalia following the announcement of sabotage as the reason for the mishap.

According to investigation officers, the dog squad which guided the police to hacksaw frame and blades which were abandoned in a nearby field also proceeded to a well near the accident site. The police were examining whether the assailants moved in the vicinity of the well or dumped any material into the well to destroy evidence.

Meanwhile, the samples collected at the accident site by the police were despatched to the Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad. Though the railway police are the principal investigators of the incident from the angle of crime, the general police were also keen upon carrying out parallel investigation since the latter had better network to deal with the situations off the railway track.

The CB-CID was likely to take over the case soon.

Meanwhile, three more bodies of the rail accident victims were identified today at the General Hospital here. They were identified as Narayana Swamy (35) of Falaknuma, Sabin Taz and Hussain Khan of Doddaballapur. Narayana Swamy was identified by his wife, Narayanamma, who was also hurt and received treatment at Gooty. She arrived here today and identified the body.

The couple hailing from Kolar district migrated to Hyderabad and worked at Falaknuma.

The other two -- Sabin Taz and Hussain Khan -- were found to be the parents of the orphaned girl child who is in the custody of the railway authorities now. Their relations arrived here today and claimed the bodies and the child.

Meanwhile, the loss to the railways on account of the mishap is around Rs 5 crores. Six coaches were badly damaged, track to a length of 300 metres destroyed and 500 sleepers were pulverised.

Each coach is estimated to cost Rs 20 lakhs. The railways will have to pay a compensation of over Rs 1 crore to the accident victims.

Inquiry gets under way: A report from Anantapur said the Commissioner of Railway Safety of South Central Circle, R.P. Agarwal, commenced the two-day inquiry into the mishap at Guntakal today.

According to railway sources, the Commissioner was learnt to have gathered information from about 30 railway employees and officials belonging to the operating, commercial, engineering and loco-running departments.

The information gathered would be compiled tomorrow for drawing conclusions for the cause of the derailment. Among those appeared before the Commissioner today were the driver of the train, V. Koteswara Rao, the Assistant Guard, Mohan Das, and the gangmen and keyman of the track section.

Besides, all senior officials and heads of different departments appeared before the inquiry officials.

The passenger train traffic on the Gooty-Pendekal section has already been okayed after restoration of the track at the accident site.

Meanwhile, the CPI leader and former legislator, K. Ramakrishna, today criticised the State Government for drawing conclusion about the derailment before completion of the inquiry and the forensic examination.

Talking to newspersons here today he objected to the reported opinion of the DGP that the derailment could have been caused by sabotage.

He alleged that factional leaders and politicians had joined together to bag the tender of the Gooty-Pendekal line-laying work.
