National Games: Cong. demands white paper on expenditure

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Dec. 23. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded a white paper on the expenditure for the 32nd edition of the National Games held here, "so that people would come to know how much was spent on what.''

Talking to presspersons here on Monday, the PCC chief spokesperson, K. Rosaiah, said the Government had bent every rule and set a bad example to the rest of the country in "buying'' athletes of other States.

This had disheartened local athletes and would not encourage them further to take any interest in the games as now every one was sure that the TD Government would prefer to import athletes in the last minute to bolster its false prestige, he said.

Mr. Rosaiah ridiculed the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, for trying to bid for the Olympics and other bigger international events, saying"He probably wants to buy the best of the athletes from other countries too and later claim that they are all AP sportspersons.''

So far sports had been one of those few areas left untouched but now the last area also got corrupted, he said. Mr. Rosaiah said though no one grudged holding the games in such a grand manner, it still remained a fact that the same Government would not divert even a fraction of money to provide drinking water facilities in drought- affected regions.

The gala inaugural and closing ceremonies had cost whopping amounts while farmers would not be given any respite in the form of waiver of loans or so. The PCC or its all-India leaders were only fulfilling their obligations and duty in criticising the TD Government and there was no law against it, he said referring to TD leaders' criticism of Ms. Sonia Gandhi.
