BJP leader held on graft charge
Surat
Dec. 23.
Arvind Godiwala, a senior BJP leader in Gujarat and chairman of the Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA), was today arrested here on charges accepting a bribe of Rs. 5 lakhs from a city-based builder, giving a knock to the ruling BJP in the State.
Mr. Godiwala was trapped by Anti Corruption Bureau sleuths while allegedly accepting the bribe from the builder on Saturday for allotment of a reserved land on the outskirts of Magdalla here, official sources said. ACB sources said the money was recovered from Mr. Godiwala's residence during a search on Saturday.
He was arrested under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and was produced before the District Judge M. D. Shah, who remanded him to two-day judicial custody till December 26 when his bail application will come up for hearing.
