By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE DEC. 23. The N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte, is hosting the three-day 32nd annual convention and national seminar of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) on its campus from Friday. This is the first time that the ISTE has identified a near-rural setting to organise the event, and the third time that Karnataka is hosting the convention, for which Mysore and Suratkal have been venues.

The organising secretary of the convention, B.S. Samaga, said at a press conference here today, that the main aim of the event was to create a common platform to facilitate technical and social interaction among ISTE members. Important policy decisions regarding the functioning and future programmes of the society would be taken at the annual general body meeting to be held as part of the convention, he added.

Dr. Samaga said the theme this year was "Role of technical education for sustainable development". A total of 176 out of 190 papers on original works and creative thinking on various topics under the theme had been selected. He said 70 of the papers would be presented orally, and the rest as posters for discussion by the participants. The recommendations of the panel discussion to be held at the concluding session would be sent to the Union Ministry of Education, AICTE, universities, and other academic bodies for consideration.
