Karnataka-Bangalore
By Our Staff Reporter
They will take out a protest rally from Town Hall to Vidhana Soudha and submit a memorandum to the heads of the KPTCL and the BWSSB. Later, a protest meeting will be organised, the Secretary of the Karnataka Kolageri Nivasigala Samyukta Sanghatane, N. Nagarajaiah, said here on Monday. Addressing presspersons, he said the urban poor, who contributed enormously to development, were being charged on a par with the rich. Quoting a survey, he said the electricity bills of hundreds of families living in slums had increased. The Government's proposal to increase the rates would further burden the urban poor, he added. Mr. Nagarajaiah said most slums in Bangalore were deprived of drinking water connections. In the name of privatisation and liberalisation, the Government was withdrawing public taps and providing individual connections. This would be an additional burden on slum dwellers, he added. The rally will be held under the leadership of the sanghatane President, N.P. Samy. Leaders of political parties are expected to attend the protest meeting.
