Introduce yoga in school curriculum: Valsaraj

Pondicherry Dec. 23. The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, has stressed the need for introducing yoga in school curriculum.

Distributing Dr. Swami Gitananda best youth and child awards to adults and children for their proficiency in yoga and asanas at the end of competitions held for third year in succession by the Pondicherry Yogasana Association here today, Mr. Valsaraj recalled the tradition of Pondicherry as a centre for yoga. The services of the Ananda Ashram, was chiefly responsible for showcasing Pondicherry as a vibrant centre for yoga.

Stating that yoga would relieve a person of various ailments and also act as a shield to protect the mindset of the youth, Mr. Valsaraj said he would only urge the functionaries of the association to offer practices and training in yoga and meditation among the inmates of the prison here.

The Tourism department had been associating itself with the yoga activities by holding festivals every year here.

The Senior Superintendent of Police, Anil Shukla, who felicitated the association for channelising the energy and potential of youth on right lines, said that from his own experience of practice of `pranayamam` he had been feeling healthy.The association had helped the police department in training some 500 police personnel in yoga.

The Managing Director of the Pondicherry Tourism and Transport Development Corporation, P. Mathew Samuel, who felicitated the prize winners, said the Tourism department would hold the annual international yoga festival from January 4 to 7 here.

A group of students presented a special dance recital fusing bharatha natyam with yoga.
