`Govt. keen to see the end of Veerappan'

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE DEC. 23. The Karnataka Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, today assured the Legislative Assembly that the Government was keen on seeing the end of the forest brigand, Veerappan.

Mr. Krishna, speaking on an obituary reference to the JD(U) leader and former Minister, H. Nagappa, and some former members, said that Nagappa's death called for harder decisions.

Describing Nagappa as pious, Mr. Krishna expressed concern over growing violence throughout the country, which resulted in loss of innocent lives for reasons which were hard to identify.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Jagadish Shettar, said everyone expected that Nagappa would be released by Veerappan at some stage and it was hard to believe that he was dead. It was sad that the life of such a good person who was a public figure rather than leader of a particular party could not be saved.

It was equally sad that the Legislative Assembly, instead of meeting to discuss the safe release of Nagappa was meeting to condole his death. The only way to pay tribute to Nagappa now was by nabbing Veerappan, Mr. Shettar said.

The JD(U) Floor Leader, P.G.R. Sindhia, said it was the system that was responsible for the death of Nagappa and asked the Government to introspect whether it had the moral right to mourn his death specially since it could not even carry the condolence message by the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, to the family of Nagappa.

His party colleague, C. Byre Gowda, wanted the State Government and the Centre to have a definite stand to treat everybody's life precious as now the stand seemed to vary from person to person.

Another JD(U) member, B.R. Krishnamurthy, demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of Nagappa.

The Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, M. Mahadev, spoke.

D.V. Sadananda Gowda, M.S. Shankaralinge Gowda and A. Ramdas (BJP) and H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, K.B. Krishnamurthy, and B. Somashekar (JD-U) and Gundappa Vakil condoled the death of Nagappa and others.

The House mourned the death of K. Shama Rao, a journalist, and also those who died in the recent train accident.
