Varman beats Kamala Kannan

Chennai Dec. 23 . One of the fastest rising teenagers in Indian tennis, Somdev Varman, battled cramps and a tough opponent to post a creditable 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Kamala Kannan in the Indian Oil Servo invitation tournament at the Krishnan Tennis Centre on Monday.

Somdev and his opponent just about made it in time to play in the tournament after taking part in the National Games at Hyderabad. And in a keen contest, Somdev seemed on cruise mode as he won the first set and then found an early break.

But Kamala Kannan came back strongly and took the second set. Although Somdev broke his opponent's serve early in the decider, he was struggling with cramps late in the match. However, he showed tremendous courage to close it out 6-4.

Earlier in the day, the defending champion Ajay Ramaswami beat Jaco Mathew 6-1, 7-5. Ramaswami was down a break early in the second set, fought off a setpoint at 4-5 and then came back from 0-40 down to serve out the match.

In other matches, Punna Vishal beat Arun Prakash 6-3, 6-4 and Manoj Mahadevan got past V.M. Ranjeeth 6-2, 6-4.

The winner of the four-day event will take home Rs. 50,000 and the runner-up will be richer by Rs. 30,000.
