The Government, which has already outlawed the All-India Jihad Committee and Al Umma, is considering a ban on the MDF. The group came into prominence recently when the police launched a crackdown during the run-up to the Babri Masjid anniversary. The extremists were arrested in Sivaganga, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts based on information provided by Hamid Bakri of Kayalpattinam, principal of Arabic College, and brother-in-law of Imam Ali, a Jihad Committee organiser, who died in an encounter in Bangalore recently. Following the arrests, the police claim to have thwarted their plans to provide arms training to MDF youth.
