9 MDF men held

By Our Tamil Nadu Bureau

Chennai Dec. 22. The State police today detained nine more extremists linked to the Muslim Defence Force in south Tamil Nadu, suspected to be on a mission to eliminate religious and political leaders.

The Government, which has already outlawed the All-India Jihad Committee and Al Umma, is considering a ban on the MDF. The group came into prominence recently when the police launched a crackdown during the run-up to the Babri Masjid anniversary. The extremists were arrested in Sivaganga, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts based on information provided by Hamid Bakri of Kayalpattinam, principal of Arabic College, and brother-in-law of Imam Ali, a Jihad Committee organiser, who died in an encounter in Bangalore recently.

Following the arrests, the police claim to have thwarted their plans to provide arms training to MDF youth.
