The present syllabus was laying stress on academic achievements like scoring maximum marks. But experience had shown that in the changing social scenario, mere academic performance would not equip students stand in good stead. There were instances in which even the rank-holders were found wanting in measuring up to expectations, as many had not made a mark in the chosen fields. The National Service Scheme, the National Cadet Corps and the Scouts movement would form part of the new curriculum, Mr. Narayanasamy said. An expert committee had been constituted to frame the syllabus. On the status of unrecognised matriculation schools, he said at present there were as many as 3,120 such schools and it had been proposed to prepare district-wise lists and release them in a booklet form for students' benefit. Schools which fail to get recognition would be allowed to run classes only up to Standard V, and as for students in higher classes in such schools, the Directorate would accommodate them in other schools. He said there would not be any ceiling on the number of matriculation schools to be started, but recognition would be accorded only after they fulfil the norms.
