Five naxals blasted the foundation stone with powerful detonators last evening and distributed pamphlets to shepherds criticising the moves to construct the project. The police did not rush to the spot immediately as a precautionary measure. According to the Mellacheruvu SI, Jivvadi Narender, lungi-clad naxals reached the place with weapons and explosives in the afternoon and blasted the plaque and the foundation stone with powerful detonators. After distributing pamphlets to the people there they went towards the Krishna river raising slogans against the project, which according to them would immerse 35 surrounding villages, if built. ``The project would only serve the purpose of the landlords of Krishna district at the cost of the local poor,'' they alleged. They also accused the NRIs, who held a meeting to lend a hand to construct the project, and said that they took the initiative for personal gains. The Guntur Committee further appealed to the people to oppose the project, "which is against the interests of backward regions of Palnadu and Telangana.''
