Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
The vocalist, T. V. Sankaranarayanan, was conferred with the title `Gana Padhmam', while the Bharatanatyam exponent, Padma Subramaniam with `Natya Padhmam' and the dramatist, R. S. Manohar with `Nataka Padmam'. The Madras High Court Judge, K. Govindarajan, who conferred the title, appealed to sabhas to encourage young and budding artistes for preserving the country's traditional arts which `would help to promote spiritualism'. He regretted that many traditional arts of the country became extinct due to poor patronage. N. Ram, Editor, Frontline, inaugurating the festival, lauded the role of sabhas in the city, for help promoting Carnatic music, dance and drama. They had succeeded in making the traditional arts accessible to people. Proliferation of sabhas should not lead to deterioration of quality music, he said. K. S. Bhathavatchalam, former High Court judge, denounced the practice of a few sabhas demanding money from artistes for sponsoring them. The sabha president, Nalli N. Kuppuswamy, said this was the first time that the Brahma Gana Sabha was organising a music festival. Mr. Manoharan said he would revive stage dramas, which he discontinued recently.
