Ramanujan expert honoured

GAINESVILLE (FLORIDA) DEC. 22. George Andrews of The Pennsylvania State University, a world authority in the theory of partitions and on the works of Ramanujan, was given an honorary doctorate by the University of Florida, Gainesville. Prof. Andrews has been the leader in the theory of partitions for the past four decades, and has explained the significance of many of Ramanujan's spectacular identities in the context of partitions.

It was he who discovered the "Lost Notebook" of Ramanujan in 1976, and has since written many fundamental papers of Ramanujan's important identities contained therein, including those on mock theta functions. Prof. Andrew's own Ph.D. thesis in the early sixties was on mock theta functions.

Krishnaswami Alladi, chairman of the mathematics department of the University of Florida, said: "Professor Andrews was chosen for this honour because of his eminence and the close ties he has with the University of Florida".

The Florida University's mathematics department is well-known for research on partitions, owing to the presence of professors Alladi, Alexander Berkovich, and Frank Garvan, who is a former Ph.D. student of Prof. Andrews. It is also a major centre for work relating to Ramanujan because Prof. Alladi and Prof. Garvan are editor-in-chief and coordinating editor of The Ramanujan Journal. Prof. Andrews, who is on the editorial board of The Ramanujan Journal, visits the University of Florida regularly for collaborative research.
