Letters to the Editor
Sir, This is with reference to your Editorial "The wrong signals" (Dec. 19). The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, has rendered a great deal of disservice to the cause of secularism and Hindu-Muslim unity in his address to the BJP parliamentary party on December 17. Many prominent Muslim leaders, including those of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, have denounced the Godhra incident in unequivocal terms. Many human rights activists and groups of independent, distinguished personalities have said that going by the scale of the Gujarat violence and the precision with which it was planned and executed, it is clear that even if the Godhra incident had not occurred, the violence would have taken place. Mr. Vajpayee should set the target for a prosperous India and Hindu-Muslim unity should be the bottomline of the 21st century. K. Malikul Azeez, Chennai Sir, The Prime Minister indirectly supports the reaction theory. But does he not know that the action-reaction chain will never end? He has conveniently ignored the holocaust wreaked upon the hapless Muslims in Gujarat. You have voiced the agony of the millions of innocent men, women and children of Gujarat who fell victim to the most appalling pogrom executed by rabid communalists. Areeb-ul-Muneeb, Hyderabad
